Primary Stage
PRIMARY STAGE
Welcome to the Primary School at Landa International Christian Academy, Entebbe Road. The LICA Primary School provides an excellent Cambridge and Cambridge International Primary Curriculum (CIPC) education blended with Biblical Christian Values for children from Year 1 to Year 6 (ages 6 to 11).
With experienced, enthusiastic and supportive teaching staff ensuring all students have the opportunities to become engaged, thoughtful and active global citizens. We address every facet of their existence – social, physical, emotional, cultural and spiritual. LICA Primary School is a place where students are…
Basis of Learning
As soon as the child arrives in our classrooms, it’s time to excel! From outdoor time, to reading time, to snack time, everything they’ll do reflects our research-based curriculum that builds a strong foundation.
The programme features activities and equipment designed for the development of gross and fine motor coordination, hands on activities that are appropriate for children at this age. Biblical Christian values are planned and incorporated into our daily routines. We celebrate individual uniqueness and encourage self-expression and exploration, while building strong foundations of love and security.
Stages
The educational chapter of a child at Landa International Christian Academy begins at the this stage.
Our approach builds on students’ strengths and it challenges them to grow. It helps develop learners who are skilful, confident and equipped to solve problems and navigate change with resilience and success God being the centre.
How We Learn
Children are natural learners. Through the Cambridge International Primary Curriculum (CIPC), as we blend it with biblical christian values, we aim for higher-order thinking skills by having multi-disciplinary projects that encourage independent learning to come of age, and complex reasoning.
The children are offered a range of experiences and opportunities through active learning. The children learn through play and investigation. They are encouraged to talk, observe, plan, question, investigate and explore, through a variety of activities which are continually adapted to suit learning needs and styles.
At LICA we talk about what the children are learning as opposed to what they are doing.
Each child is an individual and we are interested in how they progress and achieve rather than attainment. We assess children throughout the year to measure their learning; the change that occurs in their knowledge, skills and understanding as a result of the learning experiences they have.
Within LICA, we are a learning focused community.
Both the staff and children continually develop their learning, this in turn brings the school community together.
International Mindedness
In today’s increasingly interdependent world, it is more important than ever to ensure children are prepared for their roles as global citizens. At LICA we strive to educate and develop children into 21st Century Learners – internationally minded individuals who respect and celebrate diversity.
Each CIPC unit has embedded within it, across the different subjects, learning-focused activities that help children start developing a global awareness and gain an increasing sense of themselves, their community and the world around them, as well as inspiring positive action and engagement with global issues.
In addition to this, each thematic CIPC unit of work includes specific tasks related to International as a subject in its own right, as well as encouraging schools to explore the unit from the perspectives of both the ‘host’ country (the country ‘hosting the school’) and ‘home’ country (the country which children call ‘home’).
Our definition of International Mindedness here at LICA is;
International Mindedness is the ability to respect and value the cultural and linguistic diversity of our school community, by developing an understanding through learning about, from and with each other in the eyes of God.
Challenge and Engage
Our programmes provoke thinking, encourage examining issues from multiple perspectives, and provide opportunities to apply skills and understanding in real-world situations.
We aim to nurture students’ natural curiosities while also supporting them to go beyond their comfort zones and achieve more than they thought possible.
At LICA we believe learning is most effective when learners:
- Invest in the value of learning
- Are actively involved
- Are given a safe space to rehearse
- Can use the appropriate subject vocabulary or key words
- Can use the language of learning and demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways
- Are given the opportunity to reflect
- Can transfer the new into a variety of different situations
- Negotiate risk
- Make meaningful choices
The Personal Goals are at the centre of the qualities we teach in the classroom, and want our children to display to be the most successful learners possible;
- Adaptability
- Communication
- We can play well together
- Enquiry
- Morality
- Resilience
- Respectfulness
- Thoughtfulness
Learning Space
We have designed our classrooms into flexible learning spaces where children can present, collaborate, problem solve, discover, research and experiment. These spaces make use of the indoor and outdoor spaces in beautiful gardens.
