Academics
Landa Schools is a Christ-centered, innovative learning community committed to nurturing every child's academic, spiritual, and personal growth.
Through the foundation of the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum, and the intentional integration of business entrepreneurship and worship creative arts, Landa Schools prepares students to excel academically, lead boldly, create with purpose, and impact their communities for God's glory. At Landa, we believe education is not just about knowledge — it is about inspiring students to discover their God-given identity and calling.
At Landa Schools, mastery-based learning focuses on ensuring that students deeply understand key concepts before moving on to more advanced topics. Our goal is to nurture confident, capable learners who build a strong academic and spiritual foundation.
Learning at Landa is personalized — students progress based on demonstrated understanding rather than the amount of time spent on a subject. With the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum as our foundation, along with the integration of business entrepreneurship and worship creative arts, students are encouraged to move at their own pace while developing real-world skills and creativity.
Assessment is ongoing and formative, offering regular feedback that guides each student's growth. While full mastery is the goal, students can advance with reasonable proficiency and continue revisiting and strengthening their understanding over time. This flexible approach ensures thorough comprehension while also maintaining momentum and excitement in their educational journey.
At Landa, we emphasize applying knowledge, critical thinking, and using God-given gifts — not just memorizing facts. Mastery-based learning at Landa Schools is about creating meaningful opportunities for deep learning, personal growth, and continuous progress, all in a Christ-centered environment.
Flexible, Mastery-Based Progression:
At Landa Schools, students advance at a pace that matches their individual understanding and abilities. With the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) curriculum and our innovative lab school model, many of our learners move through academic content faster than traditional grade levels — often mastering more than one year's material within a school year. This flexible pacing allows for accelerated academic growth while nurturing critical thinking and leadership skills.
High Academic Achievement and Growth:
Our students consistently demonstrate strong year-over-year improvement. Whether starting ahead or needing extra support, students are empowered to catch up, excel, and surpass expectations. Through ongoing formative assessments, students track their own growth, building confidence as they strengthen both academic mastery and lifelong learning skills.
College and Career Readiness:
By the time they complete their journey at Landa, students are well-prepared for higher education and real-world opportunities. In line with our emphasis on business entrepreneurship and worship creative arts, students not only achieve academic excellence but also develop practical skills in leadership, innovation, and creative expression — equipping them for success in university studies, business ventures, ministry, and beyond.
Success Beyond Academics:
At Landa Schools, we celebrate more than grades — we nurture character, faith, resilience, and a heart for service. Our graduates are distinguished by their authenticity, entrepreneurial mindset, collaborative spirit, and commitment to living out their God-given purpose. Wherever they go, they carry the light of Christ, demonstrating excellence, creativity, and compassion in every sphere of life.
At Landa International Christian Academy, mastery learning is a foundational principle of the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) program we follow. Students progress through their PACEs (Packets of Accelerated Christian Education) by achieving a minimum score of 80% on PACE Tests, demonstrating a strong understanding of each concept before moving forward. However, mastery is not intended to slow students down — it is designed to build true confidence and competence.
When a student shows reasonable proficiency in the necessary skills, even if every detail isn't perfectly mastered, they are encouraged to continue progressing through their academic goals. Students set daily goals, work at their own pace, and are supported with extra help when needed to close any learning gaps — without unnecessary delays.
At Landa, we believe mastery is about more than passing a test; it’s about preparing students for success in every area of life. That’s why we integrate business entrepreneurship and worship creative arts into our curriculum. As students build academic mastery, they are also equipped to lead, innovate, and express their God-given talents creatively and confidently in the marketplace and in ministry.
Our learning environment balances steady academic growth with real-world skills, spiritual development, and character building. Students are not just prepared to succeed academically — they are prepared to fulfill their calling with excellence, creativity, and purpose.
At Landa International Christian Academy, we are committed to cultivating both academic excellence and essential life skills. Our approach to goal-setting, deadlines, and assignments reflects this philosophy within the framework of the ACE curriculum.
In our model, goal setting and daily academic discipline are vital. Students set their own achievable goals each day with the support of their supervisors and monitors. Meeting daily, weekly, and term goals trains students in responsibility, time management, and perseverance — essential skills for success in business, creative fields, ministry, and life.
While mastery-based learning allows students to work at their own pace, structure is still important. Students are expected to complete their PACEs within reasonable timeframes and maintain steady academic progress. Major projects — such as entrepreneurship proposals, creative arts presentations, and worship ministry projects — follow clear schedules to help students plan, produce excellent work, and meet real-world expectations.
Students demonstrating genuine effort and open communication with staff may receive limited opportunities to review and improve their work, especially on larger assignments. However, unlimited retries are not permitted, as we aim to build habits of diligence, excellence, and responsibility.
To support transparency and planning, Landa provides students with clear academic calendars, course expectations, and project timelines at the start of each term. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their learning, manage their time wisely, and even complete work ahead of schedule when possible.
At Landa, flexibility nurtures individual learning journeys — but structure builds the discipline needed for leadership, creativity, and Kingdom impact in every sphere of life.
At Landa International Christian Academy, we have reimagined assessment to better align with our philosophy of mastery, individual growth, and Christ-centered excellence. Unlike traditional grading systems commonly used in Uganda and many other educational models worldwide — where students receive A-F letter grades based on cumulative percentages — our approach focuses on true understanding and application of knowledge.
In the Ugandan National Curriculum and similar systems, a student’s final grade often depends heavily on high-stakes exams. While effort throughout the term matters, students sometimes move on without fully mastering key concepts. This can create learning gaps that affect future progress, especially in critical thinking, innovation, and leadership development.
At Landa, guided by the ACE curriculum, we use a Mastery-Based Assessment model:
Mastery First: Students must demonstrate at least 80% mastery in each PACE (Packet of Accelerated Christian Education) before moving forward. This ensures solid understanding rather than surface-level memorization.
Rubrics for Growth: Instead of only "marks" or "percentages," we use mastery rubrics that provide specific feedback on strengths and areas for improvement. In subjects like business entrepreneurship, worship creative arts, and project-based learning, these rubrics help students refine their creativity, critical thinking, and leadership skills.
Opportunities to Improve: Students have structured chances to revisit and strengthen their understanding if they do not initially meet mastery, fostering a growth mindset and perseverance.
Continuous Feedback: Regular check-ins, goal-setting sessions, and parent updates ensure that academic, spiritual, and entrepreneurial development are progressing hand-in-hand.
Skills Beyond Academics: Through worship, creative arts, and entrepreneurship integration, students are assessed not just on academic content, but also on leadership, innovation, collaboration, and stewardship of God-given talents.
In contrast to systems where the goal is to "pass the exam," Landa’s approach focuses on preparing students for real life: to lead, create, worship, and serve with excellence wherever God calls them — whether in business, ministry, or further academic pursuits.
Our mastery-based model encourages students to see learning as a journey of growth, not just a race for grades. It’s about building a foundation for lifelong impact.
At Landa International Christian Academy, we place a high value on mastery rather than seat time. Our educational model focuses on each student's understanding and application of knowledge, ensuring they master concepts at their own pace, which may not always align with traditional seat time requirements.
However, we also recognize the importance of aligning with traditional educational systems and ensuring that our students are prepared for further academic pursuits and meet any necessary criteria. Here’s how we bridge this gap:
Mastery Translates to Credits: Instead of measuring time spent in class, we evaluate students based on their ability to demonstrate mastery of concepts. For example, if a student masters a particular subject, such as business entrepreneurship or worship creative arts, in a shorter period than traditional systems expect, their transcript will reflect this achievement as the equivalent of one credit or one year of study, just as if they had spent a full academic year in a typical system.
Flexibility Meets Requirements: This approach allows us to maintain our emphasis on individualized learningwhile ensuring that students meet requirements similar to traditional systems, including those for college-bound pathways like the Ugandan O-Level system or international curriculums, including the A-G requirements for UC-bound students.
College-Ready Transcripts: Our transcripts are designed to be easily understood by colleges and universities, translating our mastery assessments into equivalent credit hours or seat time. This ensures that our students’ academic progress is recognized by institutions that may rely on seat-time-based evaluation systems.
This model reflects our belief that mastery-based education empowers students to learn at their own pace while meeting the practical academic needs required for success in college and beyond.
At Landa International Christian Academy, we blend student agency, independence, and faith-based learning in a way that is both flexible and purposeful. While we embrace aspects of project-based learning (PBL), our approach is uniquely designed to integrate business entrepreneurship, worship creative arts, and Christian values to ensure students not only master academic concepts but also grow spiritually, creatively, and professionally. Here's how we make that happen:
Unstructured Time for Creativity and Exploration: We provide students with ample opportunities to engage in projects that allow them to pursue their interests in areas such as business entrepreneurship, worship creative arts, and community service. This unstructured time gives students the freedom to express their creativity, develop entrepreneurial projects, and explore ways to integrate their faith into their academic work. Whether crafting a business model to serve a local community or preparing for a worship performance, students are empowered to take charge of their learning journey.
Flexibility In and Out of Class: While we prioritize mastery-based learning, we also understand that students benefit from flexibility. Students can work at their own pace to complete projects, revisit difficult concepts, and take creative risks. This approach encourages them to take ownership of their education and apply their knowledge practically. Business ideas, arts performances, and faith-inspired projects give students the opportunity to showcase their talents while integrating Christian principles into their learning.
Encouraging Student Input on School Operations and Culture: We believe that students should be active participants in shaping not only their academic experiences but also the spiritual and cultural environment of the school. By involving them in decision-making processes, whether in planning a chapel service, organizing extracurricular activities, or providing feedback on curriculum changes, students learn valuable leadership and responsibility skills that will serve them in all areas of life.
Balance Between Freedom and Guidance: Every student’s growth path is unique, so while we provide opportunities for independence, we also recognize that some students may need more guidance, particularly when it comes to managing time and tasks effectively. Whether it's planning a business pitch, rehearsing for a worship concert, or engaging in group projects that combine creativity and faith, we ensure that students receive the appropriate support to help them flourish, based on their individual needs.
Through this approach, we are cultivating a holistic learning environment where students can thrive academically, grow spiritually, develop entrepreneurial skills, and explore their creative potential through worship arts. At LICA, we don’t just teach students to be successful learners—we empower them to be leaders in their communities who can integrate their faith, creativity, and business skills in meaningful ways.
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), we believe in cultivating student agency and independence, recognizing these as essential components for spiritual, academic, and personal growth. Our approach is designed to empower students to take ownership of their learning while fostering creativity, leadership, and faith-based values. Here's how we nurture these qualities:
Providing More Unstructured Time: At LICA, we understand that students thrive when they have the opportunity to explore their interests in a flexible environment. We offer unstructured time for students to work on projects, entrepreneurial endeavors, and worship arts. This time is crucial for allowing students to pursue creative projects that align with their faith, whether it's developing a business plan that serves a community need or preparing a worship performance for chapel. By giving students this freedom, we encourage them to manage their own time and resources while integrating their academic learning with their Christian values.
Offering Increased Flexibility in and Out of Class: We aim to provide an educational environment that adapts to each student’s unique pace and interests. Whether inside or outside the classroom, our students are given the flexibility to engage with the curriculum at their own pace. This is especially important as we integrate business entrepreneurship and worship arts into our teaching. Students may work on a business project or rehearse for a worship performance independently or in collaboration with peers, allowing them to develop their personal interests and talents while being guided by their teachers in a nurturing Christian environment.
Encouraging Student Input on School Operations and Culture: At LICA, student input plays a key role in shaping the school culture and daily operations. We encourage students to take responsibility for aspects of school life, from contributing to chapel services to offering feedback on how we can improve our entrepreneurship programs or arts projects. This involvement helps students feel empowered, builds their leadership skills, and strengthens their sense of belonging and purpose within the community.
Tailoring Independence to Each Student's Readiness: We recognize that every student is different, and their level of independence varies based on their developmental stage. Some younger students may need more structure and guidance, while older students may thrive with greater autonomy. At LICA, we strive to match independence levels to each student’s readiness. We give students the freedom to explore, create, and learn at their own pace, but also ensure they receive the support they need when challenges arise. Whether it’s balancing academic projects, managing a business startup, or preparing for a worship service, our teachers are there to provide guidance and mentorship to ensure every student’s growth and success.
At LICA, student agency and independence are not just about academic freedom—they are about empowering our students to take charge of their own journey, apply their faith, and use their talents to impact the world around them. By fostering an environment that values autonomy and self-direction, we prepare students to become innovative leaders, creators, and servant-hearted individuals in their communities and beyond.

College Counseling
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), our high school education is rooted in the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) philosophy and anchored in the pursuit of the International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE). Our holistic approach equips students academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, and practically—preparing them for higher education, entrepreneurship, ministry, and purposeful living.
The ICCE is not merely an academic qualification; it is a discipleship journey that fosters Christ-like character, academic mastery, and life readiness. LICA’s program is thoughtfully designed to prepare students for diverse global opportunities—including university entrance, entrepreneurship, ministry engagement, and leadership in their communities.
Our philosophy emphasizes:
A Christ-centered and enriching ICCE journey that cultivates academic excellence, spiritual maturity, and whole-person development.
Entrepreneurial thinking and life skills, empowering students to create innovative solutions, manage ventures, and steward resources with integrity and purpose.
Development of student agency, independence, and leadership, enabling learners to set goals, manage time, and take ownership of their personal growth and calling.
Creative worship arts integration, nurturing God-given talents in music, visual arts, media, and performance to express worship, communicate the Gospel, and impact culture.
The ICCE’s structured levels (Foundation, General, Intermediate, Advanced, and Advanced Higher) provide clear pathways that support academic rigor, character formation, and global recognition. The journey also includes key elements such as Project, Christian Service, and Presentation, which align perfectly with our vision of holistic education:
Project Work allows students to demonstrate research, critical thinking, and entrepreneurial creativity.
Christian Service cultivates servant leadership, compassion, and community transformation.
Presentation Skills develop confidence in communication, advocacy, and ministry.
LICA supports students and parents at every stage of the upper school (ICCE levels) by:
Providing individualized academic advising and ICCE pathway planning aligned with student strengths, interests, and calling.
Equipping students with tools for university preparation, entrepreneurial ventures, and ministry readiness.
Guiding students in spiritual discernment, character formation, and the practical application of biblical principles in all spheres of life.
Our mission is to raise Christ-centered leaders, entrepreneurs, creatives, and scholars who are academically excellent, spiritually grounded, and marketplace-ready—poised to transform communities and nations for the glory of God.
University and Career Pathways at LICA
Focusing on God’s Calling, Personal Fit, and Global Impact
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), our students excel in their academic and spiritual preparation, with many gaining acceptance to highly respected universities and programs globally through the International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE) qualification. However, we believe it is crucial to understand that:
The “most selective” university is not always the best fit for every student.
Some students wisely choose institutions that align better with their academic goals, scholarships, calling, or campus culture—regardless of selectivity.
Selectivity can also apply to specific programs within universities, even at schools with higher overall acceptance rates. For example, a university may have a relatively open admission rate but highly competitive programs in areas like engineering, business, arts, or ministry studies.
At LICA, we have seen students prayerfully discern and even decline offers from highly selective institutions because they felt led to attend programs or schools where their academic, entrepreneurial, and spiritual gifts could flourish more fully. Some pursue schools known for strong niche programs, international scholarships, or missional opportunities.
We encourage our students to prioritize God’s calling, personal fit, and long-term purpose, rather than focusing solely on university rankings or perceived prestige. Our balanced approach—grounded in academic excellence, entrepreneurship, creative arts, and spiritual formation—results in graduates who are not only well-prepared but also less stressed and more grounded than many of their peers.
By any measure, LICA students perform strongly:
A significant portion of our graduates gain admission to top-tier universities and competitive programs globally.
Approximately 80% of our students matriculate into one of their top 3 choices, based on both academic and spiritual fit.
Our outcomes are based purely on merit, calling, and character—not influenced by legacy, celebrity, donations, or athletic pipelines.
We are committed to raising Christ-centered leaders, innovators, and creatives who confidently step into universities, entrepreneurial ventures, ministries, and missions—equipped to impact the world for God’s glory.

sphere of life.
Is the Most Selective University Always the Best Choice?
At LICA, we focus on God’s purpose and the right fit—not just prestige.
Absolutely not. At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), we believe the best university, program, or pathway for a student is one where they can grow holistically, thrive spiritually, and access compelling opportunities—and that isn’t always the most selective institution.
While more selective universities may offer, on average, stronger peer groups and rigorous academics, such environments are not ideal for every student. Many students have flourished at less selective institutions, while some have found the competitive pressures of elite universities challenging to navigate.
In fact, less selective universities often provide unique advantages, including:
Honors programs where students can receive greater mentorship, individual attention, and leadership opportunities than they might at a larger or more competitive school.
Substantial scholarships that dramatically lower financial burdens, allowing students to graduate debt-free and pursue further study, ministry, or entrepreneurship more freely.
Access to research, entrepreneurship projects, and close faculty collaboration, which can distinguish students applying for competitive graduate programs or launching business ventures.
It is also important to note that top graduate programs, such as Harvard Law School and others globally, consistently admit students from a wide variety of undergraduate institutions—not just elite universities. Excellence, leadership, and character can shine in any setting.
At LICA, we guide students to focus on finding the best fit—a place where they can:
Excel academically through the ICCE pathway
Grow spiritually and personally in line with their God-given purpose
Access opportunities that align with their calling, gifts, and goals
Flourish in entrepreneurship, creative arts, ministry, or other areas of impact
Selectivity is just one factor among many. Our aim is to help students discern where God is leading them to make the greatest difference—with confidence, clarity, and peace.
How Does LICA Compare to Other Strong Schools?
Whether choosing ICCE, UNEB, Cambridge, or Montessori pathways—LICA offers distinct advantages for whole-person development and purposeful college placement.
While other respected independent schools in Uganda and internationally have strong records of university placements, it is important to consider several key factors when making meaningful comparisons:
1. Class Size & Individual Attention
Most other well-regarded schools—including those offering UNEB, Cambridge International, and Montessori high school pathways—have graduating classes that are 6–10 times larger than LICA’s. Our intentionally small class sizes (15–20 graduates per cohort) allow for:
More personalized guidance during college preparation
Stronger mentorship in entrepreneurship, worship creative arts, and leadership development
Deeper spiritual discipleship and character formation
If one were to scale up LICA’s university placement results proportionally, LICA fares exceptionally well when compared to schools of much larger size.
2. Athletics Recruitment
Many larger independent schools leverage strong athletics programs that create an additional pipeline to selective colleges—particularly in the U.S. (Ivy League, Stanford, etc.), where Division I schools actively recruit athletes.
At LICA, while we value physical education and sportsmanship, our focus is on academic excellence, entrepreneurial skill-building, and creative arts, preparing students for admission based on merit, talent, and purpose-driven calling, not athletics recruitment.
3. Legacy & Background Factors
Legacy admissions (where parental alumni status influences acceptance) still plays a role at some elite institutions. However, like KLS, LICA’s admissions successes are not reliant on parent legacy, celebrity, or notoriety.
Many of our families have international, missionary, entrepreneurial, or ministry backgrounds, and our students excel on their own merit and through God-given favor.
4. Application Patterns & Personal Fit
LICA students (like KLS students) make strategic, thoughtful decisions about where to apply based on:
Geographical preference (some prefer to study in Africa, Europe, Asia, or North America)
Program specialization (entrepreneurship, creative arts, theology, STEM, etc.)
Campus culture & size that aligns with their academic and spiritual goals
For instance, some of our strongest graduates may choose a less selective institution with a world-class program in creative arts, engineering, or business, rather than automatically focusing on “big name” universities.
Our Bottom Line
When comparing talents, achievements, and calling, we are confident that LICA students—whether pursuing ICCE, UNEB, Cambridge, or other pathways—have as good or better a chance of university admission as graduates from any top school in Uganda or abroad (even without relying on athletics or legacy).
More importantly, LICA provides this advantage within a collaborative, Christ-centered, entrepreneurial, and creative environment where students flourish academically, spiritually, and emotionally—preparing them not just for college, but for life and eternal impact.
At KLS, we encourage students to apply to a maximum of 15 colleges. We recommend a balanced list of schools, typically distributed as follows: four “reach” schools, four “target” schools and three or four “likely” schools. This distribution allows students to have a strategic and manageable application process. Applying to significantly more schools can be counterproductive, as it spreads thin the student's effort and the support KLS can provide for each application.
Colleges can discern whether students have carefully researched and selected schools that align with their interests and goals, as opposed to applying indiscriminately to a large number of institutions. The classification of a school as a "reach," "target," or "likely" varies depending on the individual applicant's profile. However, the most highly selective schools are generally considered "reach" schools for all applicants due to the subjective nature of their admissions processes and extremely low acceptance rates.
This approach helps students create thoughtful, focused applications that demonstrate genuine interest in each school, increasing their chances of admission and finding the best fit for their academic and personal growth.
Navigating Selective College Admissions at LICA (ACE + ICCE + Entrepreneurship + Worship Creative Arts)
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), we equip students to pursue higher education with clarity, purpose, and confidence—grounded in the distinctive strengths of the ACE curriculum and the International Certificate of Christian Education (ICCE) qualification, enriched by our emphasis on Entrepreneurship and Worship Creative Arts.
We encourage students to view college admissions as an extension of their God-given calling and life purpose, not merely a race toward prestige. While highly selective universities are appealing to many, they are not the right fit for everyone—and they do not automatically translate into better long-term outcomes. For example, Khan Academy’s competitive internship program often favors candidates from less selective institutions who demonstrate exceptional skill mastery, innovation, and initiative—qualities that we nurture intentionally at LICA.
Through the ICCE pathway, LICA students gain an internationally respected qualification recognized by universities worldwide. The ICCE framework fosters academic rigor, independent learning, critical thinking, and Christian character, all of which position students strongly for diverse post-secondary options. Coupled with entrepreneurial training and creative arts development, our graduates bring a well-rounded, purpose-driven profile to university admissions.
When considering highly selective colleges, it is important to be realistic and strategic. A student who wishes to be "in contention" should aim to:
Achieve high marks in ICCE General, Intermediate, or Advanced Level certificates, aligning with the rigors of A-level equivalents
Demonstrate mastery in advanced coursework (such as ICCE Advanced Certificate, dual enrollment, or specialized PACEs)
Showcase entrepreneurial ventures, creative arts achievements (music, dance, visual arts, media), and ministry leadership—areas deeply embedded in LICA’s holistic education model
However, even among academically strong students, selective universities look beyond grades and certificates. Character, authenticity, initiative, and life story matter. Being from a well-resourced community like LICA (similar to competitive regions like the Bay Area) means that admissions committees understand our students have had access to many opportunities. They also seek geographic, socioeconomic, and experiential diversity, which is why a compelling testimony, community impact, or entrepreneurial innovation can set an applicant apart.
Students should be mindful of diminishing returns:
There is minimal difference between scoring 1500 vs. 1550 on the SAT, or excelling in 5 vs. 10 advanced courses
Overloading on academics without significant engagement in entrepreneurship, worship arts, ministry, or leadership—key pillars at LICA—can weaken an application’s depth
Colleges look for students who balance intellectual readiness with creative expression, entrepreneurial mindset, spiritual maturity, and relational integrity—not just those who chase numbers and certificates. A student slightly below top academic benchmarks still has a strong chance if they can demonstrate:
Noteworthy entrepreneurial projects, ministry work, or creative accomplishments
A compelling personal testimony of growth, resilience, and service
Evidence of God-given purpose, authenticity, and the courage to pursue unique callings
Conversely, a student with stellar academics but essays or recommendations that reveal entitlement, arrogance, or parent-driven ambition (rather than personal initiative) can quickly diminish their chances.
At LICA, our ACE + ICCE academic foundation—combined with Entrepreneurship and Worship Creative Arts—nurtures students who are:
Academically excellent (via ICCE mastery)
Entrepreneurially minded (problem-solvers, innovators, business starters)
Creatively expressive (artists, worshipers, communicators)
Spiritually grounded (servant leaders, resilient and authentic)
This holistic preparation empowers our students to thrive in college and beyond—not merely to be admitted, but to influence, innovate, and impact the world for God’s glory.
"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans." — Proverbs 16:3
Meaningful Extracurriculars at LICA: Beyond Titles and Tokens
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), we encourage students to pursue extracurricular activities that flow from authentic passions, God-given gifts, and a heart to serve others—not just to check a box for college admissions.
A noteworthy extracurricular is far more than just starting or leading a club, writing a research paper, or founding a non-profit or business. Whatever a student chooses to invest in, it should carry substance, integrity, and demonstrable impact. Admissions officers at highly selective universities consistently tell us that they ignore superficial résumé padding—such as research papers in little-known journals (especially those where families have paid for publication) or non-profits that exist only in name with minimal community benefit.
At LICA, where our curriculum blends ACE’s mastery-based learning, the ICCE qualification, Entrepreneurship, and Worship Creative Arts, our students have unique opportunities to craft meaningful, original activities that reflect their purpose and calling.
Here are examples of substantial extracurriculars (adapted from strong global applicants and aligned with what LICA students can pursue):
Starting a business that addresses a real-world problem and generates tangible results (for example, a venture that generated $1M in revenue in its first year)
Serving as President of the Student Body or Worship Team and using that leadership role to make a lasting impact on peers and the school community
Teaching advanced academic content, such as higher-level math or entrepreneurship, to peers—demonstrating both mastery and the ability to communicate complex ideas (a possibility through LICA’s ACE/ICCE upper-level work and mentorship roles)
Working in internships or entrepreneurial roles typically reserved for university students, whether in business, ministry, creative industries, or technology
Excelling as a notable tutor, such as being among the strongest volunteers on platforms like Schoolhouse.world, showing content mastery, mentorship ability, and service
Being an accomplished creative artist—a playwright, actor, singer, worship leader, visual artist, or filmmaker—especially when paired with original works and community engagement, not just technical excellence
Achieving excellence as a notable athlete with demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship
Demonstrating sustained community service that meaningfully improves the lives of others, such as consistent involvement in ministry, outreach, or social enterprises
At LICA, our emphasis on entrepreneurship, worship arts, and leadership creates fertile ground for such meaningful engagement. However, one of the biggest pitfalls students fall into is trying to copy what worked for someone else or joining activities just because “everyone else is doing it.” This can be acceptable if it aligns with a true passion, but admissions officers can easily discern when an activity lacks genuine commitment or originality.
A compelling story—which typically comes through in college essays and recommendation letters—is not about manufacturing a dramatic life struggle, especially when coming from a fairly resourced community. Instead, it might showcase:
Unusual humor, creativity, or curiosity
Courage, resilience, or grit in pursuing an idea despite challenges
Empathy, compassion, or sustained service to others
Quirkiness or unique personal interests pursued with depth and joy
Reflective insight into personal growth and calling
For example, being a highly regarded tutor on Schoolhouse.world is valued by top colleges not because it looks impressive on paper—but because it demonstrates mastery, communication skills, and a genuine investment in helping others.
At LICA, we guide students to cultivate authentic, Christ-centered impact, not just external accolades. Our ACE + ICCE foundation, coupled with Entrepreneurship and Worship Creative Arts, equips students to:
Build original ventures
Lead transformative ministries
Express creative works with excellence
Serve communities meaningfully
Ultimately, we want our students’ activities and stories to reflect the purpose, passion, and servant leadership that God is shaping in them—not simply the expectations of college admissions committees.
"Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters." — Colossians 3:23
he Role of Academic Mastery in College Admissions
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), we emphasize that evidence of academic mastery is always a crucial part of any strong college application. Whether a student is pursuing the ICCE qualification through our ACE curriculum, engaging in advanced entrepreneurship projects, or excelling in creative arts, solid academic performance signals to colleges that a student is prepared to thrive in a rigorous learning environment.
For the most selective universities, strong academics alone do not guarantee admission. These institutions expect applicants to have top-tier academic credentials and distinctive extracurricular achievements, compelling personal narratives, and clear evidence of leadership, service, and creativity. However, as students consider less highly selective schools—many of which offer excellent programs and outcomes—academic strength alone carries significant weight and can go a long way in securing admission and scholarships.
These schools tend to prioritize academics over extracurriculars, making a consistent record of mastery in coursework and standardized assessments even more valuable. At LICA, our ACE system, with its focus on mastery-based progression, ensures that students can demonstrate deep understanding rather than superficial completion of content. ICCE qualifications, particularly at the General and Advanced levels, offer globally recognized evidence of academic competence, further strengthening a student’s application profile.
Key ways LICA students demonstrate academic mastery:
Completing ICCE General or Advanced certificates with strong academic standing
Excelling in Entrepreneurship coursework, showing business literacy and practical application
Producing high-quality academic projects, such as research papers, capstone business ventures, or creative arts portfolios
Performing strongly on standardized assessments, whether SATs, ACTs, or ICCE-aligned external exams
Consistently mastering PACE work with understanding and integrity, showing resilience and independent learning skills
An exception to the academics-first rule is athletic excellence, which can sometimes have a disproportionate impactin admissions—even at less selective institutions—if a student’s athletic ability fills a key role on a college team. For LICA students, sportsmanship, leadership, and teamwork in athletics can complement strong academics to create a well-rounded profile.
In short, while extracurriculars and leadership matter greatly (especially for the most competitive schools), academics remain foundational across all types of institutions. Steadfast academic engagement, paired with authentic service, creativity, and entrepreneurship, equips LICA graduates to access a wide variety of postsecondary opportunities that align with both their calling and their future aspirations.
"Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance." — Proverbs 1:5
College Letters of Recommendation at LICA
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), our close-knit community, Christ-centered mentorship, and personalized learning approach create a rich foundation for compelling college recommendation letters. The strength of our relationships—developed through ACE’s individualized instruction, Entrepreneurship projects, and Worship Creative Arts initiatives—allows teachers and mentors to speak deeply about each student’s academic abilities, personal growth, and character.
When it comes to college recommendation letters, students should intentionally seek out teachers and mentors who know them well and who can provide clear, insightful examples of their strengths. Ideally, these should be core subject teachers—in English, math, science, social studies, or world languages—who have taught the student recently, preferably in the ICCE General or Advanced years (equivalent to junior and senior years).
Strong recommenders are those who have witnessed a student:
Excel academically and demonstrate mastery and independent learning (hallmarks of the ACE curriculum)
Overcome academic or personal challenges with resilience and faith
Lead or contribute meaningfully to Entrepreneurship ventures, Worship Creative Arts projects, or community outreach
Exhibit Christ-like character traits—integrity, service, humility, empathy, courage, and servant leadership
At LICA, students may also consider asking mentors or facilitators from Entrepreneurship, Worship Creative Arts, or community engagement initiatives, provided they can offer specific, thoughtful examples that highlight leadership, creativity, initiative, or service. Letters that blend academic insight with evidence of character and extracurricular impact often resonate powerfully with admissions committees.
What makes a recommendation strong?
Specific anecdotes: Not just praise, but real examples of growth, achievement, or leadership
Depth of relationship: The recommender knows the student well and can speak authentically
Balanced view: Academic readiness + personal qualities + community contribution
Alignment with LICA’s values: Faith, academic excellence, creativity, entrepreneurship, and service
The LICA College & Career Guidance Office will support students in identifying, approaching, and equipping potential recommenders as part of their college application journey. We encourage students to build genuine, consistent relationships throughout their high school years, making it easier to request meaningful recommendations when the time comes.
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." — Matthew 5:16
Standardized Testing and College Admissions at LICA
The landscape of college admissions testing continues to evolve. While many universities adopted test-optional policies in recent years, some selective colleges have since reversed those decisions—recognizing that SAT/ACT scores, when considered alongside other academic and personal factors, can provide helpful insight into a student’s readiness and potential for college success.
Even at schools that remain test-optional, applicants still need to provide compelling evidence of their academic capabilities. Grades alone can be difficult to assess uniformly, given variability in curriculum rigor across schools and concerns about grade inflation. As a result, selective colleges often look for additional, objective measures of academic mastery.
At Landa International Christian Academy (LICA), we prepare our students for this reality by:
Encouraging students to sit for the SAT 2–3 times during their high school years
Administering the SAT on-site for ease and accessibility
Using the SAT and other standardized assessments as one of the ways to benchmark competencies and track academic growth over time
We believe it is strategically valuable for internal assessments at LICA to align with externally recognized measures—so our students are well positioned both for college admissions and lifelong academic pursuits.
In addition to SAT/ACT scores, selective colleges may consider other forms of academic evidence:
ICCE Advanced Level certificates, which demonstrate mastery of a rigorous, internationally recognized curriculum
Strong performance in dual enrollment courses, where applicable
High achievement on standardized subject tests or academic competitions (though such students typically excel on standardized tests as well)
The reality is that even at many test-optional institutions, a majority of successful applicants from well-resourced communities like ours still submit SAT or ACT scores to strengthen their applications.
At LICA, we integrate entrepreneurship, Worship Creative Arts, and the ACE curriculum with a clear emphasis on academic mastery. Our ICCE pathway equips students not only with Christian worldview-based education but also with globally benchmarked qualifications, ensuring they are well-prepared for a variety of postsecondary options.
Our approach aims to give students multiple forms of evidence—standardized test scores, ICCE certifications, entrepreneurial ventures, creative achievements, and service portfolios—that together present a robust and authentic academic profile to colleges and universities.
Admissions
Because the A.C.E. program is individualized and nongraded, it allows each student to work at his own level of achievement, which may vary from subject to subject. The entire curriculum is subdivided into four areas: reading programs, core curriculum, required electives, and additional instruction programs.
- Reading Programs
- Beginning Reading Programs for Young Students
- Two Distinct Programs
Since age has little to do with readiness to learn to read, the most essential and reliable tool for placing any child in the educational process is testing. The ABCs with Ace and Christi Pretest will show which early development program is right for the student and will allow him or her to acquire the right foundation in reading.
A.C.E. has two distinct beginning reading programs for young students.
A child is given the ABCs with Ace and Christi Pretest and the Coordination Development Tests before being placed into one of the following reading programs. These tests determine a child’s maturity level and basic motor skills as well as academic preparedness. Children are not grouped chronologically, but they are placed individually in the program best suited for them educationally and according to maturity level. If a child does not score at least 80% on the ABCs Pretest or show a proper maturity level (shown by the Coordination Development Tests), he will begin with the Kindergarten with Ace and Christi program.
(1) Kindergarten with Ace and Christi
The Kindergarten with Ace and Christi program includes animal stories and songs, 60 PACEs (nearly 2,000 pages), physical and coordination development activities, and Bible and character-building stories. The full-year program is intended to foster quick learning of the letter sounds; to encourage understanding of number concepts and word relationships; to strengthen memory, visual, auditory, coordination, and social skills; and to instill Biblical principles in students. When he is ready to learn to read, he will do
- Upon completion of this program, the child is issued another ABCs with Ace and Christi Pretest to be sure he is ready to proceed into the ABCs with Ace and Christi program.
(2) ABCs with Ace and Christi
ABCs with Ace and Christi is a 12- to 15-week phonics-based program that prepares students for the individualized A.C.E. PACE curriculum. A number of outstanding reading tools, including a unique alphabet sequence, a song for each sound, poems, displays, and physical and motor development activities are incorporated into the program. The Bible stories and character development activities increase the students’ spiritual understanding and help them develop moral integrity. Progress Reports show progress in learning the alphabet sounds, PACE Test scores, quarterly PACE averages, Scripture memory passages, and the Post Test score.
Mastery-based learning at Landa Schools is about creating meaningful opportunities for deep learning, personal growth, and continuous progress, all in a Christ-centered environment. landainternationchristianaca@gmail.com
